This painting was the prototype for a series of paintings inspired by Manet's last flowers, painted as he was near death. Flowers are transitory, life is transitory, beauty is transitory. Thus, I painted twelve flower arrangements set on the pages of a Manet calendar, each depicting one of his memorable paintings. The paintings employ the dark background of his last works and are sized to his customary dimensions.
