This painting was inspired by an actual event--Evel Knievel's attempt to leap across the Snake River on his motorcycle. A large crowd had gathered that quickly became vicious, as TIME magazine documented. It put me in mind of Ruben's "Rape of the Sabines". I added the ubiquitous photographer and the little girl, oblivious to what may be her fate some day.

This painting was part of an exhibition called "RAPE" that travelled to universities and women's centers across the United States for two years. It was reproduced in an review of the exhibition by Lucy Lippard in the Chicago-based weekly, "In These Times".
